I came to them for different reasons. I make different wines in each. But the questions are the same: How do I represent a place as a whole? What does it do best?
I make wine because it is one of the few things I know I cannot rush.
It has taken me to two places.
Amarante was always there. It is where my family comes from, and where I grew up returning to, eventually finding a character in the wines that was unexpected.
Bairrada came later. It started through the wines, then through the vineyards, and eventually through the people who still tend them, in an attempt to try and save some of these great vines from abandonment.
I came to each for different reasons.
But over time, I found myself asking the same questions in both.
How do I represent a place as a whole?
What does it do best?
Face B is my attempt to find out.
My reading of Bairrada: limestone, Atlantic air, and old varieties from a region I think still deserves more attention. I work mostly with Bical and Baga here, from a handful of vineyards I've come to know and love over the years.
From my family's farm in São Simão, Amarante — granite, north-facing, around 400 metres up on the slopes of the Serra da Aboboreira. I work mostly with Azal here, alongside the field blend on older vineyards that have been planted on this land that my family has tended since 1721.

Saibro comes from the farm in São Simão, a small village near Amarante.
Granite, north-facing, four hundred metres up on the Aboboreira mountains, worked across vines between thirty and eighty years old.
I don't keep a cellar door, sorry. Visits are private, by appointment, at the farm in Amarante, and I plan each one with you.
